The debate over police action heated the house on Wednesday morning. Defending the police action on the CJP protesters, Union Minister J.P. Nadda said that students who choose to engage in activism must be prepared for police action. The leader of the upper house recalled his days as a student activist during the Emergency, said he was picked up from his classroom twice.
“I have been a student activist and I was arrested several times from the classroom during the Emergency under Congress rule,” he pointed out.
Nadda was responding to Kharge’s charge that democracy under the BJP is not safe, and his claim that those responsible for using brutal force against students protesters were still roaming freely.Nadda said that the police was justified in taking all necessary actions to bring law and order situations under control.
Congress’s Mallikarjuna Kharge, in the early hours of the Parliament monsoon session on Wednesday, said democracy is not safe, people are not safe, hitting out at BJP for its police action on CJP protesters.
Besides, Nadda also described the police swoop of Communist Party of India’s office on Delhi as a ‘normal law and order situation’ and accused the opposition of politicizing and sensationalizing the police action. The issue was raised at the party office in the House by CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas.
CPM leaders alleged that the police action was connected to Ghosh’s participation in a recent student protest at Jantar Mantar organised by the Cockroach Janta Party.
