The wife of Ladakhi activist Sonam Wangchuk has vocally opposed the medical treatment being administered to him at the Safdarjung Hospital without his family’s consent and doctors who have been monitoring him while he is on a prolonged hunger strike.
In a X posting, Gitanjali J. Angmo explained why she will not approve any oral or intravenous treatment for Wangchuk without consulting with his doctor and him. She wondered why he was taken to the hospital from a place where he was ‘stable’.
Angmo said Wangchuk on Friday wasn’t in any condition that needed immediate attention and added that only after the family’s consent would any kind of medical action be taken.
The controversy happened when Delhi Police transferred the writer Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar, where he was on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28, to Safdarjung hospital on Saturday.
According to police, it was done on medical advice and as per directions issued by the Delhi High Court. Meanwhile, officials had announced that Wangchuk, whose health is reportedly deteriorating after a near three-week fast, was transferred to receive “crucial medical treatment.
Police also said that some demonstrators tried to disrupt the transfer but it went without incident.
Wangchuk had once again reaffirmed his resolve to continue the protest after being hospitalized, saying he had already shed about 20 per cent of his body, and demanded for constitutional protection for Ladakh.
