As per National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) Programme, Uttarakhand has officially emerged as the sixth fully-literate state of India with more than 98% of children above the age of five years being literate.

The achievement of this milestone came when state plan to achieve adult literacy indicators set by the Department of School Education and Literacy in the Union Ministry of Education. Governor Lieutenant General (Retd.) The proposal for Uttarakhand to become a fully literacy state has been accepted by Gurmeet Singh.

This achievement takes Uttarakhand to the list of fully literate states in the country and now it is now joined by Mizoram, Goa, Tripura, and both the state and the Union Territory of Sikkim.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami called it a historic milestone saying that not only had the people participated but it was due to the efforts of the government on a sustained literacy drive in the state. The development will further reinforce India’s quest toward ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047, he added.

The Chief Minister also reiterated the government’s efforts and goals to build up digital literacy, financial literacy, life skills education, and continuing education programmes so that everyone will have access to good education.

On 19th June, the Uttarakhand Cabinet had approved the proposal for the state to become fully literate, furthering the steps towards the official declaration.
