The Central government on Saturday issued a notice to Telegram to take immediate action against the alleged circulation of pirated films, web series and other copyrighted content on its platform.

According to sources, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) has asked Telegram to identify and act against channels and groups involved in the unauthorised distribution of copyrighted content, including movies and shows available on over-the-top (OTT) platforms.

The platform has also been directed to strengthen its systems to prevent copyright infringement and submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within 15 days detailing the measures implemented to comply with the government’s directions.

The notice comes amid growing concerns over digital piracy, which continues to affect India’s film and streaming industries. Telegram has come under fresh government scrutiny after the government banned the messaging platform during NEET UG re-exam to prevent paper leaks.

According to the government’s directive, Telegram has been asked to introduce effective safeguards to curb the sharing of pirated content and prevent misuse of the platform for copyright violations.

The move is aimed at protecting India’s creator economy and safeguarding the interests of filmmakers, OTT platforms, broadcasters, producers, distributors and other copyright holders.

Online piracy has remained a persistent concern for the entertainment industry, with pirated versions of newly released films and web series often appearing on messaging platforms shortly after their release.

Industry stakeholders have repeatedly called for stronger enforcement against digital piracy, arguing that unauthorised circulation of content leads to significant financial losses and undermines the rights of creators.

Following the latest notice, Telegram is expected to respond to the ministry and submit its compliance report within the stipulated deadline.
