Iranian officials said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf are scheduled to travel to Geneva for signing the ceasefire agreement with the US brokered by Qatar and Pakistan. The meeting is expected to include Vice President JD Vance and could become one of the highest-level direct contacts between Iran and the United States in nearly five decades.
Iranian officials said the agreement would also include mutual respect for sovereignty and a commitment not to interfere in each other’s domestic affairs. Confirming the closure, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said that the deal brought an “immediate end” to the war and that both sides would hold talks within two months aimed at reaching a final settlement.
On Sunday, Trump announced that the US and Iran had successfully concluded the negotiations and an “immediate and permanent” end to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, signaling the apparent end of more than three months of conflict in the Middle East. President Donald Trump took to his social media account on Truth Social to declare an agreement was in place and will be signed on Friday in Geneva. “The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all!”
His announcement came shortly after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the mediator revealed that an agreement had been reached. Sharif said the pact would be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday.
One of the most significant parts of the deal is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Announcing the end of US blockade at the strategic water channel, Trump said- “Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”
China and UN welcomed the breakthrough calling it an important step towards ending the conflict through diplomacy. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said ending the fighting and reopening the Strait of Hormuz were critical developments. “I hope that the parties will build on this new momentum and redouble their efforts towards a final resolution of the conflict, he added.
