According to many reports, a unit of Trinamool Congress (TMC) members of parliament is poised to join the Tripura based Nationalist Citizen Party of India (NCPI) creating a new political meshmaking ahead of the next elections.
Political observers have reportedly heard a increased efforts of talks between the dissident TMC dissident leaders and the NCPI in recent weeks. There currently isn’t any official statement yet, but sources are saying the switch is being considered in hopes of forming a larger political base outside of the party system.
The move arrives as there are growing rumors of a divide among some TMC leaders. There could be ramifications if any of the current or former MPs made a formal change since the regional parties are still influential in eastern and north-eastern India, analysts believe.
The Nationalist Citizen Party of India (NCP), which is based in Tripura has been hoping to broaden its organisational reach outside the Northeast. Enhancing the party’s visibility and outreach in other states might be achieved with the addition of leaders that also have parliamentary experience.
But experts in politics point out, parties switching and alliances can form more frequently around big elections, when politicians assess their potential in the future. But a formal announcement by either side has yet to be made, and thus the reported move continues to tease the head of local politics.
An official confirmation about the reported discussions has not been made by either Director TMC or Director NCPI. As any such transition may impact on political conflict and opposition in the months ahead, observers await with interest.
