According to reports, Google quietly laid off its cloud division over the past two weeks, making it the major layoff for the search platform. According to people in the know, employees in several teams within Google Cloud were affected by the cuts. Among them was Google’s Threat Intelligence Group, a prominent security unit known for publishing research on cyber threats and hacking activities.

The report further stated layoff in part of Mandiant, a cybersecurity firm acquired by Google in 2022. It highlighted that the latest job cuts were a part of a broader transformation driven by AI.

AI has emerged as the biggest reason why major technology firms have been massively slashing their staff. Data reveals AI-related layoffs in the first five months of 2026 already surpassing the combined total recorded in 2024 and 2025. As many as 97,000 job cuts were declared by major US employers in May alone, the highest since 2020. On a year-to-year date basis, tech sector job cuts have rose to 1,23 lakh- the highest of any sector.

Most importantly, AI was cited as the primary reason for joc buts for the third time in a row in May while 38,579 job cuts were attributed to automation. The figure brings the total number of AI-linked job cuts in 2026 to 87,714, exceeding the combined total of 54,836 in 2025 and 12,742 in 2024.

While overall employment growth remains positive, individual hiring activity continues to lag. Experts say a mismatch between available jobs and displaced workers is contributing to uncertainty in the market. These numbers are striking as raises questions AI replaces once human driven outcomes. The speed and the shift in particular suggest AI adoption is not steady and happening much faster than anticipated.
