Saurabh Sharma, a controversial former transport department constable, who is in jail for alleged money laundering, has filed a regular bail application in the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Sharma cited the wife’s serious medical condition and continuous treatment as the main reason for his plea for release.

Sharma in the bail application before the High Court bench at Jabalpur said that his wife is suffering from ailments of health and needs prompt medical attention and succour from near and dear ones. His lawyers contended that he must be present during her treatment, and that the court should take into account “humane considerations” when considering the petition.

Saurabh Sharma was once a constable in the transport department and was also the subject of a big investigation earlier when agencies alleged that he had assets in excess of the sources of his income. The extent of the money found as a result of the investigations, made Sharma a household name in the media and gave rise to the nickname of “crorepati former constable.”

Investigating agencies are accused of Sharma of making huge sums of money by illegal means and financial irregularities associated with money laundering operations. The case is being investigated and various agencies are reportedly looking at property records, financial documents and bank transactions related to him.

According to the sources, the High Court may hear the bail petition next week. The case still has a lot of public interest because of the charges of corruption and huge amount of assets of a lower rank government officer.
