The case of Twisha Sharma’s death has gained further momentum now that a court in Bhopal has handed over the custody of the former judge Giribala Singh to the Central Bureau of Investigation for five days, who is the victim’s mother-in-law. The court also granted the custody of Twisha’s husband Samarth Singh for another five days while agency conducts further investigation regarding the alleged dowry death.
A day after the Madhya Pradesh High Court denied anticipatory bail to Giribala Singh, the commission of the high-profile investigation witnessed a significant development with the police arresting her. Her lawyer reportedly did not file a petition against the CBI’s demand for custodial interrogation.
Twisha Sharma, a resident of Noida, was found dead on May 12 at her matrimonial home in Bhopal after she had been married to Samarth Singh in December 2025. After Twisha’s death, her family members filed a complaint against her in-laws and her husband for mental and physical harassment for the issue of dowry.
The case has been filed under various provisions of the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. Giribala Singh is the accused in a case of dowry death, cruelty to a married woman and common intention offenses.
Family communications, financial transactions and electronic evidence are now being investigated to fully understand how Twisha’s demise came about. The case is getting a lot of public attention for several reasons, most notably Giribala Singh’s distinguished legal career, and because of the seriousness of the incident.
