According to reports, a new discovery by researchers studying data obtained from India’s Chandrayaan-2 mission has revealed strong indicators that there may be ice hidden under the surface of the Moon near the Moon’s South Polar Region. The new findings have emerged from detailed studies conducted by scientists at the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad, using data collected through radar observation.

The research involved the use of highly detailed radar observations using the Dual Frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar (DFSAR) instrument mounted on the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter. Through careful studies of the radar echoes reflected off the lunar landscape, researchers were able to detect subsurface features that can indicate the presence of water ice, especially since these features occur beneath a layer of lunar soil.

The South Polar Region of the Moon has remained the focus of many studies for years because it is always in shadows and, therefore, has ideal conditions for harboring water ice on the moon. In fact, previous missions have shown the existence of surface ice, but this new study reveals key information about the location of subsurface ice deposits.

The DFSAR’s ability to penetrate the upper layers of the lunar ground allowed researchers to peer beneath the dusty exterior, mapping potential reservoirs that could be crucial for future human habitation.

Space agencies worldwide, including India’s ISRO, view these findings as a significant boost for long-term lunar exploration. Subsurface ice is widely considered a goldmine for future space missions; if successfully extracted, it could be processed into drinking water for astronauts, oxygen for life support systems, and hydrogen to create rocket fuel. This discovery reinforces the strategic importance of the lunar south pole and sets a promising foundation for upcoming missions, including Chandrayaan-4, which aim to explore resource utilization on the Moon.
