New Delhi: The SC on Wednesday agreed to examine the validity of CBSE’s 3 language policy introduced for Class 9 under the new curriculum framework, and agreed to sought a ‘comprehensive response’ from the Union Govt, the CBSE and the NCERT.
A petition challenging the new policy introduced by CBSE under which- the study of a third language was mandated from 2026-27 academic year, in addition to the two native languages for Class 9 students.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi issued notice on the petition and posted the matter for hearing in the second week of July, after the Court reopens following the summer vacation.
During the hearing, the bench also asked the Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati to submit a detailed report on the logistical preparedness for the implementation of the propose policy.
Citing concerns over feasibility and implementation, Senior Adv Mukul Rohatgi appearing for the petitioner argued that it would be practically impossible for students to study three languages from the very next academic year, adding that books for the same were also not available currently.
Kabi Sibal, a senior Advocate hearing a matter related to the case, argued that the language is a matter of choice and cannot be imposed.
The matter is posted for July ,after the summer vacation. All stakeholders in the matter are urged to submit their response.
