Moscow: Amidst growing international concerns on Ebola virus, Russia in a major breakthrough announced the development of vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain linked to outbreak in DRC.
According to a statement by the Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko. The embassy’s post said: “Russian scientists have developed a vaccine against a new #Ebola strain, Health Minister #Murashko announced. According to the Russian scientists, the vaccine may also protect against the rare Bundibugyo strain linked to the outbreak in the #DRC.”
The announcement follows WHOs decision to categorize Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (IHR), 2005.
The Bundibugyo strain is among the lesser-known Ebola virus but remains highly dangerous with no treatment or vaccine approved so far unlike the more common Zaire ebolavirus strain.
WHO recently raised the national risk level in the DRC outbreak to “very high”. As of the latest available data, more than 80 confirmed cases and several confirmed deaths have been reported, alongside hundreds of suspected infections.
