NEW DELHI: A new development in the legal battle involving the disputed inheritance of the estate of deceased businessman Sunjay Kapur, worth around ₹30,000 crores is taking place. Wife Priya Kapur has now filed an application at the Delhi High Court seeking permission to withdraw money from his EPF account. The application seeks permission to utilize the frozen money for paying the schooling fees of her husband’s children, Samaira and Kiaan, who are from her husband’s previous marriage to Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor.
The high court has issued a notice in the matter following the hearing on the application before the roster bench. Priya Kapur’s legal representatives have approached the high court seeking modification of the interim injunction order that was issued on April 30. This order had placed an embargo on the disposal of the properties within the country belonging to Mr. Sunjay Kapur owing to “suspicious circumstances” surrounding the disputed will of 2025. Although the order restrained Priya from disposing of the property or shares, it made provision for discharging liabilities of his children.
In presenting Priya Kapur’s case, Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar highlighted how the particular accounts that can operate as per the initial order lack liquidity enough to finance the huge academic expenses of the children. The new appeal highlights how the funds being withdrawn from the EPF accounts will only be used to cover the expenses of schooling, university and other educational costs of Samaira and Kiaan as well as the school fees of Azarias, Priya’s minor son.
Sunjay Kapur, who had been the former Chairman of Sona Comstar, died in London back in June 2025. However, the dispute for Sunjay Kapur’s vast empire escalated following the challenge mounted by Samaira and Kiaan on the validity of the last will, which named Priya as the sole beneficiary. This followed their quest for the fifth portion of the inheritance, as stipulated under law.
