President of Russia Vladimir Putin is set to visit India for the upcoming BRICS Summit slated for September 12-13. This was announced by the Kremlin ahead of the highly anticipated meeting of the bloc in its 18th edition, hosted by India, which holds the 2026 chairmanship of the bloc.

This was revealed by the Kremlin envoy for international affairs Yury Ushakov, whose statements were then corroborated by the Russian Embassy in South Africa on social media platform X.

This visit comes as another milestone in the relationship between Russia and India, noting that this will be the second time Putin will visit India in one year. Previously, he made a visit to India in December 2025 where he attended the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.

This comes in the wake of the visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to New Delhi earlier this week for the BRICS Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Lavrov, during the meeting, met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and briefed him on bilateral relations and key global issues such as the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. Lavrov added that PM Modi has reiterated his plans to make a visit to Russia later in the year.

The country formally took charge of the BRICS chairmanship from January 1, 2026, under the following theme for the enlarged 11-nation group: “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The bloc now comprises a highly formidable array of emerging nations consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

In light of the unfolding geopolitical realignments, the upcoming September summit is likely to be dominated by discussions on economic cooperation and alternative means of settling international trade disputes.
