There was a fire outbreak in the electrical generator in Barakah Nuclear Power Plant located within Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra Region, resulting from a drone attack on Sunday. The fire outbreak, according to a report released by the Abu Dhabi Media Office, led to immediate action being taken to contain the fire in the critical infrastructural facility.
Although it may have been shocking for many people to hear about the attack, the UAE government immediately took steps to assure the population. According to an official press release from the Abu Dhabi Media Office, the fire outbreak was contained successfully and put out without causing any harm to anyone.
Importantly, the officials revealed that the fire outbreak had not caused any adverse effects to the safety levels in the facility, meaning that nothing abnormal had occurred in the radiological levels within the facility. Furthermore, the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) confirmed that all of the plant’s systems were running perfectly well, just like usual.
The Barakah plant, costing an estimated $20 billion, was developed in cooperation with South Korea and started its operation in 2020. Being the first and sole nuclear energy station in operation in the Arabian Peninsula, the Barakah plant is considered to be a major component of the UAE’s sustainable energy network.
Although there is no group which claims responsibility for the attack, the current development constitutes the first time in history that the four-reactor station has come under attack in the face of geopolitical tensions prevailing in the region.
Following the attack, the officials from Abu Dhabi warned citizens not to believe any rumor or fake news circulated through online networks.
