Bhubaneswar: A tragic and devastating incident has emerged from Odisha’s Malkangiri district. Over 5,300 chickens died at a poultry farm due to a prolonged power outage and intense heat. The farm owner is estimated to have suffered a loss of approximately 1.5 million rupees.

According to reports, a fault in the poultry farm’s transformer caused a complete power outage. Temperatures were rising, making it crucial to operate the farm’s cooling and ventilation systems to protect the chickens. In the absence of electricity, the farm owner decided to operate a diesel generator (DG set).

But the real crisis arose when diesel became unavailable at local petrol pumps. The power outage and the lack of diesel for generators exacerbated heat stress within the farm. More than 5,300 chickens died from suffocation and heat. The total weight of the dead chickens is estimated to be approximately 12 tons.

The poultry farm owner, devastated by the massive losses, spoke to reporters and leveled serious allegations against local petrol pumps. He said, “Despite such a huge emergency, local petrol pumps flatly refused to supply diesel in barrels (drums). If diesel isn’t immediately arranged and the power problem isn’t resolved, the remaining chickens on the farm will die in agony.”

The incident has also sparked concern and anger among other poultry farmers in the area. They are demanding that the administration restore power supply and ensure the availability of diesel in case of emergency.
