Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant, while hearing a case, referred to the country’s unemployed youth as cockroaches. He said, “Some unemployed youth are like cockroaches, who later become media, social media, or RTI activists and attack the system.” On Friday, a bench comprising the CJI and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was hearing a petition filed by a lawyer seeking senior advocate status.
The bench reprimanded the lawyer, saying, “Society already has enough parasites who attack the system.” The bench added that everyone in the world may be eligible to become a senior advocate, but you are not entitled to it. Even if the Delhi High Court designates you a senior advocate, the Supreme Court will overturn that decision based on your behavior.
Hearing the petition, the court asked whether the petitioner had no other pending cases and whether this was appropriate behavior for someone aspiring to become a senior advocate. The court stated that senior advocate status is conferred, not achieved on one’s own.
The bench questioned, “Does this seem right to you being so intent on achieving this?” The bench added, “The Supreme Court may consider having the CBI investigate the degrees of several lawyers, as there are serious questions about the authenticity of their degrees. The Bar Council of India will not do anything about this because it needs votes.” At the end of the hearing, the petitioner apologized to the court and requested permission to withdraw his petition. The court granted the withdrawal.
