Google made headlines in the world of wearable health devices with the introduction of the new Fitbit Air, a screen-free fitness tracker meant for all-day wearing and precise biometric monitoring. The new model represents an interesting approach by Google that places it in direct competition with other popular screen-free devices, including Whoop.
“Introducing Fitbit Air. It’s lightweight, screenless and comfortable enough to wear 24/7 — with a battery life* of up to a week. * Battery life depends upon many factors, and usage and actual battery life may be lower”, wrote Google on X.
One of the key highlights of the Fitbit Air is its screen-less design. In fact, Google has intentionally opted not to include a display because the company believes that the absence of the display increases the comfort of wearing it, extends battery life, and makes the tracker more aesthetically pleasing. Thus, the company touts the comfortable fit for continuous wearing at night, when training vigorously, or taking a shower.
Notwithstanding its rather minimalistic design, the Fitbit Air includes advanced sensor technology and comes with all the usual features of other trackers, including tracking heart rate and counting steps. At the same time, it offers advanced metrics in the form of heart rhythm monitoring with notifications for A-fib (Atrial Fibrillation). Moreover, the tracker can monitor one’s blood oxygen levels (SpO2) and skin.
