K Annamalai, who once led the growth of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Tamil Nadu, is particularly not listed among the party candidates in the 2026 Assembly elections and this is an indication of a change in the party policy in the state.

On April 3, the BJP announced its 27-member list including senior party leaders like Tamilisai Soundararajan of Mylapore, Vanathi Srinivasan of Coimbatore North, and Union Minister L Murugan of Avinashi. But Annamalai, the party head who had spearheaded the vigorous campaign of the party in the last three elections, is not challenging the April 23 polls.

Oppositional to his conservative nature, Annamalai was instrumental in giving the BJP a strong presence in the grassroot of Tamil Nadu, especially in the recent Assembly elections. He is not in the list several months after he had been replaced by Nainar Nagendran as the state BJP chief.

Although it is speculated, Annamalai has insisted that his move is voluntary. He had earlier on claimed that he had asked the party leadership to leave him without a constituency, opting to instead concentrate on strengthening party workers and helping candidates in the state. After the announcement, he congratulated the nominees and reiterated that he would also campaign to the fullest on behalf of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

He also attacked the incumbent Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-Congress alliance and was confident that the NDA party would do well in terms of securing a huge mandate.

The move by Annamalai to an organisational position after the electoral politics is a major trend in the changing political scenario in Tamil Nadu.
