In a dramatic attack against Iran, the US and Israel jointly assassinated their arch-enemy, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Following this, speculation in Iran was rife that his son, Mojtaba, would succeed him, but reports currently indicate that the prestigious position has been given to the theologian Ayatollah Arafi.
Following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, amid the ongoing tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States, reports are circulating that Ayatollah Arafi will be taking over his position. He has been included as a faqih (religious scholar) member of Iran’s interim leadership council and has temporarily assumed the duties of the Supreme Leader. According to Iran’s state news agency, senior cleric Alireza Arafi has been appointed the country’s temporary Supreme Leader.
Alireza Arafi was appointed following the death of Ali Khamenei. Reports indicate that he will assume responsibility for the country until a new Supreme Leader is elected. Previously, this position was held by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was highly respected in the country. The US considered him a staunch enemy, but according to the constitutional process within Iran, not a leaf moved without Khamenei’s permission. Arafi will now take his place for the time being. According to Iran’s constitution, this provisional council consists of three members:
- President (Masoud Pajeshkian)
- Chief Justice (Ghulam Hosseini Mohseni Eje’i)
- A religious leader from the Guardian Council – Ayatollah Arafi has been appointed to this post.
- This council will jointly lead the country until a new supreme leader is elected through the constitutional process.
