Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Mumbai today with a high-level delegation. This visit, from February 27th to March 2nd, is an important step towards restoring diplomatic relations between India and Canada at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After years of tension, Mark Carney’s visit is seen as the beginning of a new and “pragmatic” partnership, ending the bitterness between the two countries.
Prime Minister Carney began his visit in Mumbai, India’s financial capital, reflecting his business-minded approach. During the first two days of his visit, Carney will meet with top Indian CEOs, financial experts, and representatives of Canadian pension funds. The primary objective of these meetings is to increase business investment between the two countries and align private sector interests with government policies.

Significantly, ahead of Carney’s visit to India, Canadian officials appear to be backtracking on some of the serious allegations they had leveled against India. Canada had previously accused India of interfering on its soil and engaging in activities such as cross-border pressure. According to a CTV report, a senior Canadian official said that if Canada believed India was interfering in its democratic process, the Prime Minister would not have visited India.
Carney will meet Modi in New Delhi on March 2.
Carney will arrive in New Delhi on March 1st and will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi on March 2nd. The main agenda will include resuming the long-stalled Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations. Additionally, discussions will be held on security and defense cooperation, with the goal of doubling trade between the two countries. Carney will then depart for Australia and Japan, a tour that will begin February 27th and continue until March 7th. The purpose of the visit is to reduce Canada’s economic dependence on the United States and open new trade routes.
