On Tuesday, Netflix also made submissions to the Delhi High Court stating that producers of Manoj Bajpayee-starrer Ghooskhor Pandat have made a conscious choice to change the title of the film, claiming that the title is not an accurate reflection of the story and the intention of the film. The streaming platform claimed that it was done to prevent needless controversy and misunderstanding.
In a court of Justice, Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav, Netflix attorney Rajiv Nayyar argued that the film was a fictional police reform drama and that the previous title had caused disruptions, which were unwanted, that did not conform to the content of the movie. He included that the film has already finished principal photography and is in the post-production editing phase.
The case was taken to court after the petition was filed by Mahendra Chaturvedi, who wanted the release of the movie to be halted, claiming the title is defamatory to the Brahmin community as it linked the word Pandat with corruption and bribery. In the hearing, the other solicitor general, Chetan Sharma, told the court that the Union government was aware of the decision of Netflix and that the producer had assurance that all promotional content about the previous title was done away with.
With the submissions made, the court dismissed the petition when the counsel of Chaturvedi, Vineet Jindal, reported that the complaint had been resolved as the name of the film was to be changed. It was noted in the court that there was no need to conduct further adjudication because the concerns of the petitioner were resolved.
The scandal was triggered when a preview midriff by Bajpayee as a corrupt cop was premiered at a Netflix occasion in Mumbai earlier this week. The film led to vehement responses by political leaders and religious organizations as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, ordered the case to be registered against the filmmakers.
