US-EU Trade Deal Suspended: European countries have now openly opposed US President Donald Trump’s occupation of Greenland. Angered by the dispute over Greenland, the European Union (EU) has announced the suspension of the trade agreement with the US. This decision by the European Parliament is a major blow to US President Donald Trump.
In fact, the US and EU had agreed on a trade deal in July 2025. The European Parliament has now decided to suspend it. This move was made in protest of Trump’s annexation of Greenland and his threats to impose tariffs on its allies.
Bernd Lange, Member of the European Parliament and Chairman of the INTA Committee on EU-US Trade Relations, said in a statement issued on Wednesday (January 21, 2026) that US President Donald Trump’s plans to impose tariffs of 10 to 25 percent on European countries are against the terms of that trade agreement. Referring to US President Donald Trump’s address at the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting held in Davos, Switzerland, Bernd Lange said, “I think he has not changed his stance. He wants to make Greenland a part of the US as soon as possible. Therefore, we suspend the trade deal with the US with immediate effect.”
He made it clear that there is no possibility of any agreement until such threats end. He said, “We will put the process on hold until the situation regarding Greenland and these threats becomes clear.” Lange accused Trump of using tariffs as a tool of political pressure to buy Greenland. He called this move an attack on the EU’s economic and territorial sovereignty.
