On Tuesday General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of the Army Staff of India gave a blunt message to Pakistan regarding continued sighting of drones across the border and he has requested Islamabad to contain what he termed as drone intrusions into Indian airspace. This issue was officially brought up in the weekly Director General of Military Operations (DGMO)-level meetings between the two nations.

To the annual press conference of the Indian Army, General Dwivedi indicated that he presented the concerns of India to the Pakistani counterpart, demanding that Pakistani should maintain control and stop such activities. Although the Army chief did not go as far as to go overboard with rhetoric, it was evident that New Delhi takes such incidences seriously and is on the alert.

He further assured that security in general in Jammu and Kashmir was still sensitive yet very well under control with the Indian forces being very well prepared in all aspects.

In his further instructions, General Dwivedi stated that the drones had been detected in the past few days were not very large, and they used their lights on, flying not very high but at low to medium altitudes. The chief of the Army said that on January 10 they spotted a total of six drones, then two to three the next two days.

He postulated that the drones were defensive-looking and could be deployed to spy on the positions of the Indians. There was a possibility, he said, that these drones were making the test whether we were taking any counter-measures, or whether there were weak points or slackness along the border. General Dwivedi also said that the reconnaissance activities might also be targeted at determining the possible lines of infiltration attempts.

But the chief of the Army was sure that the reaction of the Indian Army would have deterred any future mischief. It must have been a negative answer, he said to himself, which showed that India still has a strong surveillance system and counter-drone system in place.

The comments highlight the fact that border security is still a priority for India despite changing threats since the Army is very keen on aerial activities and is operationally ready to respond to any aggressive intent.
