Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have brought back the new life to One Day International (ODI) form of cricket, and the form of the game is very engaging and cannot be ignored by the fans. Their few ODIs have become an event in themselves, given their steady retreat in T20Is and Test cricket, and have made the matches even an event on a par with the 2023 ODI World Cup. The recent ODI series with Australia and South Africa revealed the new crowds and attention the format was back on radar, which in the previous few years was in a lull in the eyes of the fans.

The fact that only Kohli and Rohit play has been a major aspect in ensuring that the ODIs gain its relevance and popularity again. In the process, the two cricketing legends have played at the peak of their performances, and every ODI has become a spectacle to the fans, broadcasters, and even sponsors. Not only do they attract viewers but also they motivate young cricketers and keep the world focused on the ODI campaigns of India. Both analysts and fans have admitted that the two players have made the duo more active in ODIs, and this has reinvitalized their interest in the 50-over game which was slowly becoming irrelevant in the face of the T20 leagues.

Expanding on this revival, a former Indian all-rounder, Irfan Pathan, has suggested a more innovative timeframe in order to make the most of Kohli and Rohit in the ODIs. Pathan proposed to make bilateral series five matches rather than three, triangular or quadrangular tournaments in order to ensure continuous interest. “That is why I keep on repeating why not have five ODIs rather than three? Why not arrange triangular series or quadrangular? These two greats have only one format now. It is evident that they have revived the focus in the ODI cricket and it is logical to cash in on it,” as Pathan said on Star Sports.
