At around midnight on Thursday, Zohran Mamdani took the oath of office as mayor of New York City, becoming the first Muslim to head the largest city in the United States. The ceremony of taking the oath was done at a disused subway station in Manhattan, which gave the event a symbolic meaning.
At the old City Hall subway station, which is one of the first underground stations in New York and known as a place with excellent designs and elegant arched ceilings, Mamdani took the oath of office. Mamdani declared his commitment to serve the city, putting his hand on a Quran, which both highlights the personal and historic character of the moment. According to a news agency, the unusual setting emphasized the fact that the city had a strong attachment to the public infrastructure and common civic demarcations.
It was the honour and the privilege of a lifetime to take office as mayor, said Zohran Mamdani in calling the moment significantly meaningful. His thoughts on the symbolism of the place were in his first speech when he was sworn in; the old subway station captured by him as a reminder of the significance of public transportation in the development of New York’s vitality, the health of its population, and its lasting legacy.
He stressed that the idea of public transit has been the key to the city’s development and inclusion, which unite communities and promote economic growth and social development. His selection of venue, he claimed, was a sign of his administration to reinforce and modernise key services to the people.
It is also at the ceremony that Mamdani made his first significant appointment, which is appointing Mike Flynn as the new commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation. The appointment was an early emphasis on the issues of infrastructure and mobility, which are likely to be at the center of his administration.
However, at the end of the event, Mamdani gave a thank-you speech to the people who attended the ceremony, including supporters, officials, and city workers.
