Indore: Around 100 hospitalised more than three people had died in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore over the last few days after reportedly falling ill due to consumption of contaminated water, according to city officials. The incident has raised the eyebrows of the locals especially in the Bhagirathpura locality where there has been a reported outbreak of suspected diarrhoea.
Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava affirmed that he had been informed of three deaths involved in severe diarrhoea. But he never revealed the names of the dead. It has been alleged by the local residents that the number of people that may have died as a result of the outbreak may be higher since people have already lost their lives, saying that there are five people, four of them women who lost their lives.
Complaining about the state of affairs, the mayor mentioned that the state government has been asked to provide the families of the dead with financial help. We have advised Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to give due compensation to the victims. It is treating all patients at no cost at government hospitals, Bhargava said.
The Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Madhav Prasad Hasani announced that following the reports of a wide spread illness, the health department undertook a mass survey at the affected region. Two thousand seven hundred and thirty-three households were approached and about 12,000 residents were checked. Among them 1,146 individuals with mild symptoms received on-the-spot primary treatment.
Hasani also stated that the majority of patients complained about the symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration, which manifested themselves after the intake of drinking water distributed in the area. Even though the reports of water sample tests are yet to be obtained, initial evidence indicates that water drains may have found their way into water pipelines and thus became contaminated.
The health department has threatened to take the officials to book should they be found negligent.
