Neemuch: An event held to celebrate the 140th Foundation Day of the Indian National Congress at Gandhi Bhavan in Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh, became contentious on Sunday afternoon with intra-party divisions and factionalism literally coming out in open during oath taking of newly elected block presidents.

Youth Congress president of Madhya Pradesh, Yash Ghanghoria and former MLA Shiv Chauhan were present at the event. The situation got heated as the president of the Congress district Tarun Baheti tried to take Ghanghoria to the main venue directly. Youth Congress leaders, Rahul Ahir and Assembly constituency president Shravan Sen as well as many party workers protested this move.

The protesting workers said that the state Youth Congress chief was to visit the welcome stage organized by them first. Soon the argument was turned into a heated debate in front of Gandhi Bhavan and quickly evolved into pushing and shoving on the road, resulting in all the chaos and panic inside the venue.

The situation was still tense, despite the attempts of the party leaders to manage it. Angry workers shouted slogans of Murdabad over district president Tarun Baheti who they said was playing a BJP agent after Ghanghoria was finally escorted into the venue. The unrest was also persistent even after the official programme was over and Congress workers were observed arguing among themselves on the issue of welcome stage.

In a strong response, Yash Ghanghoria stated that those who do not adhere to Gandhian principles even on such a grand and holy occasion as the Congress Foundation Day and end up sloganeering and engaging in mayhem cannot be termed as genuine members of the Congress. He complained about the want of discipline and called on party members to be united and stick to the ideology.

The event has again illustrated the entrenched internal differences among the Congress unit in Neemuch that brought to question the organisational discipline when the party is on a very busy period.
