New Delhi: Amid a row over the definition of the Aravalli hills approved by the Supreme Court, the SC put its November judgment in abeyance on Monday (December 29, 2025). Chief Justice of India (CJI) said that a new committee has to be formed to do the survey and study on the Aravalli hills. The court issued notice to be heard again on January 21.

CJI said it would revisit, seek clarifications on whether the restriction of Aravallis to landforms of 100 metres or higher would lead to unregulated mining. SC has stated that a detailed identification of areas now in the ‘non-Aravalli’ range would have to be done.

Environmentalist Vimlendu K Jha says, “The Supreme Court has taken suo moto cognisance of the Aravalli matter, especially the definition of Aravallis. How can an ecosystem that has existed for billions of years be redefined? Redefining Aravallis for mining and real estate is an attack on water sovereignty, air quality, and the climate of North India. If we start redefining Aravallis using a narrow height-based lens, where does it stop?”
