A highly improved law and order situation in the violence affected Karbi Anglong district and West Karbi Anglong district of Assam saw mobile internet services returned in the area on Sunday, according to an official order. The restoration is the climax of several days of tension in the area where the day before there were clashes that cost two lives and more than 170 injuries, the vast majority of victims being security agents.
The order issued by Ajay Tewari, Additional Chief Secretary of Home and Political Department, said that mobile internet services, suspended on December 23 were reinstated with effect. The police reported that the law and order situation in the two districts has normalised and improved and that there seems to be no threat to citizen peace and tranquillity at the moment.
Although services were resumed, there was still a high level of security with more forces being stationed in worst affected sections. Rapid Action Force (RAF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and army still helped the local police to ensure the stability. Section 163 prohibitive orders of Bengal National Security Service (BNSS) also persisted to make sure that no further violence escalates.
The local authorities at Diphu were reporting that sanity is slowly restoring to the victimized regions. Stores and companies have begun to reopen, and people are going out to shop to purchase basic goods. The governments stressed that one has to be on the watch to make sure that the situation is kept in check.
The intensified violence in West Karbi Anglong district last week resulted in the injury of 173 security officials, and it shows just how intense the unrest is. The internet connectivity of mobile phones is likely to facilitate communication among the residents and security officials and help in ensuring that they are able to coordinate and respond swiftly to the upholding of the law. The governments have encouraged the citizens to comply with the security agents and follow their orders to maintain the peace and stability of the area.
