The long-awaited return of Shreyas Iyer to the competitive cricket scene has been long overdue after he sustained a severe rib injury in the line of duty during one of the ODI series against Australia. This had left him hospitalised and he is just starting to recuperate but medical experts have recommended that he should not be subjected to any physical strain within a few months. This means that the Punjab Kings captain will hardly see the field until the beginning of the IPL next year in March and even then it is not clear.

It is reported that the major issue is pain in the belly part of Shreyas Iyer who doctors think would be aggravated in case he is put under pressure or exposed to any form of intense activity. He has been advised to avoid the activities that involve the core or strain the stomach region. The recommendation is based on the results of an ultrasonography test, which revealed that there are positive indicators of recovery but that also required a high level of caution.

Iyer is undergoing the guidance of orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, one of the experts of sports medicine in India, who has been involved in the recovery of numerous athletes such as Rishabh Pant and Neeraj Chopra. He has recommended a recovery time of four to five months to be conservative to a full recovery to both Iyer and the BCCI. A follow-up ultrasound scan will be conducted in the following months and will define the further process of his rehabilitation.

The injury is a huge blow to Iyer whose career has already been shattered several times by fitness problems. He will miss the home ODI series against South Africa during this winter and the series with New Zealand. This comes as a great disappointment considering his comeback as a central middle-order batter especially after his outstanding results in the 2023 World Cup and the 2025 Champions trophy.
