An inferno swept through a three-story building in the East Flatbush area of Brooklyn in the early hours of Saturday morning, killing two individuals and transporting two more to area hospitals. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) reports that the initial emergency calls for help came in at 6:49 AM, when callers reported dense smoke billowing out of 1693 Nostrand Avenue, a multi-purpose structure situated between Beverly Road and Cortelyou Road.
The first emergency units arrived on the scene just two minutes after the call, only to witness extremely volatile conditions on the second floor of the building. In less than a minute after initiating an aggressive fire attack, the thermal draft of the fire forced the flames to spread across the entire upper floor of the building.
The shaken residents who made it out of the building reported total chaos and panic on the streets, surrounded by thick layers of black smoke. “The flames were coming out of this window. They were shooting out like they were literally reaching for the tree. That’s how fast the flames went up,” said witness Rich Savaille to local news agencies.
“Fortunately enough, the fire department responded in just two minutes and put the fire out, but that was crazy. The flames were really strong.”
Casualties and State of Investigation
Fatalities Reported: Citizen NYC, which monitors local emergency services on its frequency radio station, reported that firefighters began a full-scale search and rescue of any trapped persons in the burning smoke-filled hallways immediately after the fire broke out. “Firefighters found two people dead on the spot in the top floor of the building,” the report read.
Injuries: Two more occupants of the building were taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities revealed that one of the injured individuals is in critical condition, while the other individual was hurt, but not seriously.
Containment: Thanks to the strong effort put into extinguishing the flames from inside, more than a dozen FDNY companies fully contained the raging inferno at 7:38 AM.
While the main fire is put out, emergency response personnel stayed at the scene to ensure structural safety of the building. Fire investigators from the FDNY fire marshals have assumed responsibility at the scene.
