Toshifumi Suzuki, the legendary retail executive who transformed 7-Eleven into an international giant and brought revolutionary changes to consumer behavior in Japan, passed away due to heart failure at the age of 93. The parent company Seven & i Holdings reported the death of Suzuki, who died on May 18, on May 25, 2026. Widely recognized as the “father of the convenience store business in Japan,” Suzuki changed the shopping and eating habits of the Japanese people.
The Japanese businessman was born in Nagano in 1932. Suzuki worked for the supermarket chain Ito-Yokado in 1963. In the early 1970s, Suzuki saw a possibility of bringing the concept of a convenience store to Japan. His proposal provoked fierce opposition among corporate leaders, university professors, and retail consultants, who claimed that it was impossible for small and 24-hour shops to compete with traditional family-owned stores.
“They were all wrong,” Suzuki said in an interview in 2013. Defying his opponents, Suzuki founded Seven-Eleven Japan in 1973 and opened the first franchise store in Japan in May 1974. Over the years under Suzuki’s management, the number of franchise stores grew up to 85,000 globally, 21,000 stores located in Japan.
A Retail Revolution
Suzuki didn’t stop at copying the American model but perfected it further. He implemented an ultra-efficient logistics management system that involved timely, cool storage restocking so that fresh foods could be delivered several times a day. Suzuki took the convenience store, or konbini, a step further and made it an important facility in any neighborhood through the introduction of other services such as utility payments, delivery of packages, and even ATMs.
In one of the most dramatic episodes involving corporations in history, Suzuki managed to take over 7-Eleven’s parent company, Southland Corp. of America, which had declared bankruptcy in 1990. Suzuki was chairman and CEO of Seven & i Holdings until he resigned in May 2016 due to a clash between him and activist investors.
