While India takes the chairmanship of BRICS this year, the nation will strive to expand multilateralism, foster sustainable development, develop economic resiliency and construct a more inclusive global order through cooperation of all five countries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Sunday.

The Prime Minister made the comment during his discussions with the Foreign Ministers and Heads of Delegation of BRICS countries during their discussions in New Delhi. The meetings took place during the ongoing meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the BRICS countries in the national capital.

Noting the increasing importance of the grouping, Modi said the BRICS was also a useful forum to see collaboration among emerging economies and the aspirations of the Global South. He reiterated the importance of enhanced cooperation between the Member States to face the challenges of the world and to move towards achieving shared prosperity.

The Prime Minister explained that India’s chairmanship would center on enhancing cooperation in a number of key areas, such as building sustainable development initiatives, fostering innovation, strengthening economies, and building a greater and more multilateral contribution to the international community.

Dr. S. Jaishankar, the External Affairs Minister, also spoke at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting earlier in the day, emphasising the need for peace, stability and security to ensure global peace and order. Recent international conflicts have “once again brought to the fore the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful solution of conflicts”, he added.

Jaishankar also highlighted the importance of BRICS in the arena of tackling the challenges of the modern world and building cooperation among the developing and emerging economies.

The high-level meeting is taking place with several senior leaders, such as Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi.

This year’s theme for the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of the BRICS group is Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability. It is hoped that negotiations might include deepening economic ties, deepening cooperation on future emerging technologies, as well as sustainable development and future issues related to global governance.

The meeting is considered an “important” step to build the agenda for further bilateral meetings held under the leadership of BRICS’ host countries.
