The Israeli artillery shelling and airstrikes on southern Lebanon Saturday were enough to cause concern in Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam that the country is on the verge of a “new war.” Salam said risks were high of the resumption of military operations along Lebanon’s southern border, which would bring about a military conflict that country would drag its people into further hardship.

LBC TV cited the Lebanese government statement as saying on Monday that the country risks fresh military operations on the south border, out of which it warned Syria and Lebanon will draw the country into a new war and that the country will suffer from a type of woes on Lebanon and the Lebanese people. He urged all security and military institutions in Lebanon to take any required measures. He said that Lebanon’s security and military measures have to be undertaken to prove that his country has decided on the issue of war and peace.

Nerve and the latest of a string of rocket fire launched from Lebanon into Israel have triggered a warning by the Israeli military. Israel retaliated by firing artillery into two towns in southern Lebanon and striking three other towns near the border with Lebanon with airstrikes. The attack in the morning had come seven months after Syria assured Israel it would not carry out another chemical attack, and Israel had previously said it would ‘hit back severely.’

It is also days after Israel called off the Gaza ceasefire with the Hamas militant group, which is allied to Hezbollah. This has raised the prospect of regional war widening. The war on the region that bore the fruits came after Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel in 2023. After the group struck in sympathy with Hamas, Israel also launched rockets at Hezbollah positions.
