As North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has spoken a radical statement through state media, its adversaries have been warned as first reported on Thursday. It was then in coincidence to a dramatic political development in South Korea. An unexpected defeat for the preserved ruling party in South Korean parliamentary elections may be a precursor to a change in political power since the politics of the Korean peninsula could now turn turbulent.
This year, the nuclear-armed North has fanned the flames by declaring South Korea “the enemy of principle”, conducting agencies for inter-Korean dialogue, and putting the territory of South Korea as its primary target for threats of conflict even over a simple violation of borders.
Less than a day after receiving the US and ROK naval exercises warning, Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, said North Korea is fully prepared to implement all necessary retaliatory actions, potentially using all its weapons at its disposal against its adversaries, as stated by KCNA, the main media outlet of North Korea. This is what his speech and visit to the Kim Jong Il University of Military and Politics pronounced on the 10th of April, the day when the South had its elections for Parliament members.
“In fact, all the preparations for a future war need to be advanced in the present time more than anything else,” Kim warned, stressing the necessity of better readiness. He emphasized a need for a complete planning, which was of paramount importance, as the continued peacefulness of the world depended primarily on the outcome of the given combat.
Released images that were broadcast by state media turned out to capture the leader Kim inspecting a display, which he identified as a model of Seoul, capital of South Korea, among others. As used by the North Korean military, it is a metaphor reflecting the main emphasis of its strategy on its southern neighbor and the ideology of its armed forces as a whole.
The South Korean ruling party’s hardline stance towards the North and close relationship with the US was affected by the result of the parliamentary elections that put the opposition party in the presidential seat of President Yoon Suk Yeol. As it happened, this is a big challenge that may affect President Yoon’s strength and possibility to govern.
