Washington: United States and Iran failed to meet a middle ground for ending the war told US President Donal Trump on Friday. At a press conference at the White House, Trump stated that he is not happy with the concessions put forth during the talk. He said, “but I’m not satisfied with it”. “We just had a conversation with Iran. Let’s see what happens. But I would say that I am not happy.”
Without revealing further details on the nature of the talks, he said, “they’ve made strides, but I’m not sure if they ever get there.” “Do we want to go and just blast the hell out of them and finish them forever — or do we want to try and make a deal?” he added, saying he would “prefer not” to take the first option “on a human basis, he added.”
During the address he also highlighted that Iran must not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon, warning that it would be used rapidly across multiple regions if acquired. “You cannot give Iran a nuclear weapon — because they would use it on a place called Israel very quickly, and they would use it in the Middle East, and they would use it in Europe, and we’d be next. And it’s NOT going to happen,” he said, amidst the ongoing war.
Following his ‘not happy’ comment; the White House is said to have sent a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson on Friday declaring that the “hostilities that began on Saturday, February 28, have terminated”. The message skirted a 60-day deadline the President faced on Friday, which required him congressional approval to continue the war.
Furthermore, the US Treasury has all warned any ships from making payments to Iran for transit through the Strait of Hormuz. It said the act could face punitive sanctions, including contributions to organizations such as the Iranian Red Crescent Society.
On Thursday evening, Iran delivered the draft to Pakistan, which is mediating the peace talks, IRNA reported. In attempts to end the war, both nations have been meeting to come to a middle ground. This was the second time the nations conversed on terms. Iran’s previous demands were rejected by Trump.
Iran and US conflict has entered the third month now. Situation remains tensed despite temporary ceasefire as both sides attempt to strike a deal to end for good.
