Iranian state media on Thursday released the first footage showing the damage to the Tehran compound of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, coinciding with his burial in his hometown of Mashhad.

Khamenei was killed on February 28 during the opening phase of the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran. Several members of his family were also killed in the strike, while his son and current Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Ali Khamenei, was injured.

The 35-second video shows extensive destruction inside the Imam Khomeini Hussainiya, the hall located within Khamenei’s compound that was regularly used for key meetings and public addresses.

The footage captures collapsed sections of the structure, twisted steel beams and large piles of debris, reflecting the scale of damage caused by the attack.

The video was made public on the day Khamenei was laid to rest in Mashhad, bringing to an end a week-long funeral procession that passed through several cities, including Tehran and Qom.

Before returning to Iran for burial, the coffin was also taken through the Shia holy cities of Najaf and Karbala in Iraq, where large numbers of mourners gathered to pay their respects. The casket had earlier lain in state at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla before being carried in a public procession.

The release of the footage comes as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to escalate.

The US military announced fresh strikes on Iranian targets, saying the operations were aimed at ensuring the security of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz following attacks on cargo vessels. Hours earlier, US President Donald Trump declared that the interim agreement intended to end the conflict was “over.”

Iran responded by saying it had launched attacks on US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait, describing the action as retaliation for earlier American strikes.

The renewed military exchanges have raised concerns about the future of the ceasefire framework and the possibility of another round of wider regional conflict.
