The Iranian foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, on Monday arrived in New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, ahead of high-level Iranian diplomacy as tensions with the U.S. on nuclear politico-economic matters continue.
During the UNGA High-Level Week, Araghchi is scheduled to meet with the relevant regional players on regional developments. Prior to his arrival in New York, he had also met with Qatar officials in Doha and discussed the latest developments in Qatar.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is to visit New York on Tuesday to participate in the Iranian delegation. Iran’s executive Ronald firefighter Pezeshkian will make his speech at the General Assembly on Wednesday, September 23, during the morning session, Iranian state news agency has reported.
In his speech, Pezeshkian is supposed to present Iran’s stance on Iran-related developments throughout the world and in the region, including the continuing US-Israeli conflict against Iran, as Iranians describe it. He also is set to meet leaders and high-level officials with several countries sidelines of the UNGA.
Pezeshkian’s programme also will feature meetings with Iranian expatriates in the United States and talk with American experts and think tanks.
The Iranian mission will come at a time of new tensions between Tehran and Washington. The United States, too, has granted visas to Pezeshkian and Araghchi for the UNGA, with some other members of the Iranian delegation reportedly denied visas. Washington has also put entry and purchasing bans on the Iranian team.
The high-level debate of the 81st UN General Assembly began on September 22 and will be hosted by world leaders who will address various global topics through nine days. Iran’s involvement is expected to be a key point of discussion, especially with the current conflict between Tehran and Washington, and the diplomatic tensions in the region.
