Germany Car Accident: A major car accident took place at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany on Friday (December 20), in which a car entered a crowded area and ran over people, killing two people and injuring more than 60. In this case, the local German police have arrested a 50-year-old doctor from Saudi Arabia, who was driving the car. In the first report, 11 people were killed, but later officials said that only two people have died so far.
Magdeburg is the capital of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. City chief Rainer Haseloff told Reuters that there was no further danger in the city because the accused driver had been living in Germany for the past two decades. He further said that at present there is no further danger in the city because we have held only one person responsible in this case, who is in our custody.
Germany Car Accident; Who Is The Suspect
News agency Reuters told a local broadcaster that German police suspected the car was carrying an explosive device. However, Reuters declined to give the number of casualties and only confirmed a massive operation in the market, which could also be an attack.
“The initial assessment is that there was an attack on the Christmas market,” Michael Reif, a spokesman for German broadcaster MDR, said. He said several police officers and emergency services were on the scene, and that the market manager had asked people to leave the city centre. Witnesses told the broadcaster that the car drove straight into the crowd at the market, towards the town hall.
The accident happened 8 years ago in Germany
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed concern over the incident. In a post on X, he said that reports from Magdeburg suggest that something bad is about to happen. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. We stand by them and with the people of Magdeburg. Stating that eight years ago, a Tunisian man, Anis Amri, drove a truck into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people and injuring dozens, he thanked the rescue workers.
