Malta: To improve relations, Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Advisor, engaged in open and honest discussions, with Wang Yi, China’s Foreign Minister, during a weekend meeting held in Malta. These talks between the world’s two economies focused on trade disputes and the increased military presence in the Pacific region.
During the two-day meeting that took place on Saturday and Sunday, Wang Yi brought up the topic of Taiwan, a self-governing island that China considers to be part of its territory. He emphasized that Taiwan is a ” line” in Sino-US relations aligning with China’s policy. In response, the United States restated its commitment to protecting Taiwan from any aggression by China. The White House issued a statement acknowledging the significance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait while emphasizing both country’s dedication to maintaining lines of communication and pursuing high-level engagement.
China’s official statement regarding the Malta meeting closely mirrored the account provided by the United States. It described the discussions as open, substantive, and aimed at communication.
The context surrounding these talks reflects increasing tensions, between these two nations.
China has accused the United States of using technology and trade as tools to further their security interests, while Washington has raised concerns, about Beijing’s goals, especially in relation to Taiwan and the wider Pacific area. In response, the United States has been forming security alliances, in the Pacific to counterbalance China’s growing influence.
