A crucial turning point in the inheritance dispute involving the estate of the deceased industrialist Sunjay Kapur saw the Delhi High Court direct his wife, Priya Kapur, to maintain all his properties. This interim order was made after the children from Sunjay’s first marriage to Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor – Samaira and Kiaan – questioned an alleged will that supposedly transferred all his possessions to their stepmother.

Justice Jyoti Singh of the Bench remarked that the “genuineness of the will” is an issue for trial that is likely to take time. Before the decision, the court stressed that it was necessary to preserve the assets so that they do not become “dissipated.”

Allegation of “Fabricated” Will

The legal battle, filed by the children alongside their mother, Rani Kapur, brings into question the validity of the document itself. According to the allegations in the petition, there were many “suspicious circumstances,”

The court restrained Priya Kapur from alienating, transferring, pledging, or otherwise dealing with equity shareholdings in three Indian companies, withdrawing provident fund amounts, disposing of personal artworks, or withdrawing funds from three accounts in two Indian banks, except to meet liabilities towards the children under the divorce decree. It barred her from operating foreign bank accounts and from selling, transferring, or otherwise dealing with cryptocurrency assets.

Court-Mandated Limitations

While the court made it clear that it did not have the authority to oversee any property located overseas, it made extensive limitations regarding domestic assets and finances:

Shares & Stock: Priya Kapur cannot sell or change her shares in three large Indian firms.

Financial Investments: The court has frozen three bank accounts, and it has barred any withdrawals from the funds allocated to the provident fund.

Digital & Luxury Items: The court has ordered that no cryptocurrency investments or luxury goods can be sold or transferred.

Justice Singh observed that if the assets could not be safeguarded and if the will was proved invalid, “the children and Rani Kapur would be deprived of their rightful portions.” The former chairwoman of Sona Comstar expired in June 2025 after suffering a heart attack while playing polo in London.
