New Year 2025: As India gears up to welcome the New Year, a pub in Pune, Maharashtra, is taking a unique approach to celebrating the occasion. The High Spirits Cafe in Mundhwa is distributing packets of condoms and oral rehydration salts (ORS) to its regular young customers as invitations to its New Year’s Eve party.
The pub claims that this initiative is aimed at raising awareness among the youth about safe practices and promoting responsible behavior. However, the move has not gone down well with the Pune Congress, which has criticized the pub for its actions, stating that they are not in keeping with the city’s educational and cultural heritage.
The pub’s gesture has sparked a debate on social media, with some people supporting the initiative and others criticizing it.
The incident has sparked widespread discussions, with concerns over its impact on the city’s image, particularly its reputation as an educational and cultural hub.
Maharashtra Youth Congress Files Complaint Against Pub
Akshay Jain, the president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress media department, lodged a formal complaint with the Pune Police Commissioner, condemning the pub’s actions. In his complaint, Jain stated that the inclusion of condoms and ORS packets was inappropriate, arguing that it does not align with the educational and cultural values of Pune. He further expressed concern that such actions might set a wrong example for the youth, potentially leading to harmful habits in society.
Pub Defends the Decision as Part of ‘Safety and Celebration’ Theme
In response to the backlash, High Spirit Cafe defended its decision, claiming that the inclusion of condoms and ORS packets in the gift bags was part of their “Safety and Celebration” theme for 2025. The pub explained that the gift bags, which were given to invited guests, also contained party essentials like noise makers, confetti bombs, and a contact number for a designated driver to encourage guests not to drink and drive.
