Spotify is tightening the rules on its Family plan, and members who skip a new verification step could pay for it for a year.
The company is rolling out QR code verification, asking Family plan members to prove they live with the plan manager. The code appears on the manager’s phone, and members scan it with their own camera after a pop-up shows up on their device. The code refreshes every few seconds, so sharing a screenshot won’t work.
As per sources, members get seven days from the moment they receive the notification. Miss the window and the account drops to the ad-supported Free tier. The member also can’t join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months, though an Individual plan is still available.
The rule itself isn’t new. Spotify’s Family plan terms require everyone on the plan to live in the same household. The same 12-month ban already applies to the address checks Spotify has used before.
Not everyone is happy. On Spotify’s community forum, some users say they were removed after missing a verification prompt, while others blame an incorrect postcode in Spotify’s records. The QR method was first spotted by users on Reddit, according to 9to5 Google’s report of October 19, 2026.
Some subscribers are already looking for workarounds. Reports on tech forums describe people using live screen-sharing over video calls to complete the scan remotely.
However Spotify has not publicly commented beyond its support page.
