On Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that the eligible families under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana would be provided with an LPG cylinder free of cost on the festivals of Holi and Diwali.
The communication was made during the programme organised for disbursing LPG refill-subsidy to over 1.89 crore beneficiaries in the State.
The Uttar Pradesh Government has provisioned Rs 1,500 crore for subsidy on LPG refills to the beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme.
Government Explains LPG Costs and Subsidy
Speaking at the event, the Adityanath had told about the cost of the LPG cylinder being needed for domestic use and the financial support being given by the Central government in this regard.
Domestic gas cylinder is valued Rs 983.45 and the Government of India gives subsidy of Rs 335 to this, he said. The Chief Minister says beneficiaries are currently paying Rs 648.55 from their pockets.
The expert Committee headed by Adityanath said that the state government’s policy to distribute free cylinders to the needy families on the occasion of the festival of Diwali and Holi was likely to help the poor families save money to buy other requirements for the festivals.
“With the money saved you can buy Diwali sweets and Diwali lamp,” he said.
CM Highlights Ujjwala Scheme Expansion
The Chief Minister also made a comparison between the present availability of LPG connections in comparison to that under previous Congress governments where the poor families used to suffer in getting LPG connections.
Free LPG connections had been given to eligible families under their welfare schemes, he added.
Earlier in the day, Adityanath had described Deepotsav being organised in Ayodhya on November 7 “as a symbol of social unity” stating that the festival involves people from different sections of the society through their religious and cultural engagement.
