The Uttar Pradesh government has appointed Rajeev Krishna as the Director General of Police (DGP) of the state for a full term of four years, ending in September, which comes after almost four years of the absence of a permanent police chief in the state. Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad made the appointment official on Sunday by issuing an order.
A 1991-batch Indian Police Service officer, Rajeev Krishna has been serving as the acting DGP since May 31, 2025. His appointment comes after a lengthy tenure of acting chiefs of police to replace former DGP Mukul Goel in 2022.
Krishna is an Electronics and Communication Engineering graduate from Gautam Buddha Nagar, and has over three decades of policing experience. His performance highlights include holding many key positions in Prayagraj, Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Bareilly and Aligarh districts. He was also on central deputation for five years from 2012 to 2017 before going back to state service.
The selection was done as per the guidelines of Supreme Court and UPSC. The State government had initially put 19 eligible IPS officers before the panel for consideration. The UPSC had reduced the list of three to two candidates after checking their credentials, one of whom was senior IPS officers Renuka Mishra and Piyush Anand, and then finally the government chose Rajeev Krishna for the top job.
Krishna, expected to serve until June 2029, will play a vital role in improving law and order, policing reforms, and public safety in Uttar Pradesh during his tenure.
