On Tuesday, reports of an MLA spitting pan masala into Vidhan Sabha hall led Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana to sternly reprimand the MLA. Mahana expressed his disappointment over the incident and said that he even supervised the personal cleaning of the affected area.
Mahana, however, addressed all the members before the commencement of the assembly session, advising them to dispense with dignity and cleanliness in the House. On GFIFA, he had confirmed that he had seen a video of the MLA who was responsible for the act but did not want to disclose his name to avoid the act of public embarrassment.
“I have been explained by someone that someone from Vidhan Sabha had spat inside the hall after consuming pan masala this morning. I got it cleaned myself and I also came here myself. I have seen the video, I know who MLA is. But I don’t want to humiliate anyone out there publicly, I’m not taking their name,” Mahana said.
He called upon all the MLAs to act responsibly and not get into such incidents in future. “Any member who witnesses such behavior should be immediately intervening to stop that.” He also added that it is our collective responsibility to keep the Assembly clean.
Finally, Mahana also advised the MLA in question to admit to her mistake and step forward if she did so. “Otherwise, I will be forced to call them out.”
Discussing how legislators observe discipline and decorum is an outcome of what happened. Mahana, while remaining mum on public shaming, stayed defiant and remained a reminder that no such behavior will be endured inside the state’s highest legislative institution.
