The probe into alleged cracks in the donation gathering process at the Ram Mandir is in a crucial phase and now is prime time for Champat Rai and the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. The report of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) now awaits vigilant waiting and the questions it may ask or answer could carpet trust officials with further questions about the management of the temple’s offerings.
Rai has become a talking point in the construction of a temple to the Lord Ram under the protection of the trust he directs. Although he is often portrayed as the organizer of the design and building of the temple, it is not clear whether his faults in the administration of the project or financial mismanagement should not also be investigated.
Rai has always been connected with the Ram Mandir movement in his capacity of being a full-time RSS pracharak and a senior leader of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP). He is considered by his supporters to be a good organiser and over the course of decades he worked tirelessly on behalf of the Temple, whilst many have criticised him for being too focused on the power dynamics of how decisions were made within the trust itself.
The issue has also brought to the fore the longstanding concerns over the creation of the trust. A number of saints and religious leaders had earlier pointed out that there was a lack of adequate representation of those who had been involved with the Ram Mandir movement for long.
Rai had been appointed president of the trust but some religious leaders alleged that she was still significantly influenced by a coterie of senior officials.
It is unclear what investigators will discover or, for that matter, if the SIT’s outcome is a report of wrongdoing or if investigators report that the functioning of the trust adhered to established procedures. The outcome could significantly impact public perception of one of India’s most prominent religious institutions.
