Lucknow: Paddy procurement is expected to start in November in the eastern region of Uttar Pradesh, where the state government aims to open 4,000 purchasing centers in different districts.
The MSP has been fixed at INR 2,300 per quintal for paddy and INR 2,320 per quintal for Grade A paddy. Farmers will also be paid INR 20 per quintal for unloading, sieving, and cleaning of their paddy.
These centers have been arranged in coordination with the food and logistics department and other procurement agencies to manage paddy purchases more effectively in the region. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the officials to pay farmers within 48 hours of the sale to help them financially during the harvesting season.
The procurement centers will operate daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, which means that farmers can transport their produce within the required time of the day. As per the agriculture department, the area sown with paddy in the state for the 2024-25 Kharif marketing season is 61.24 lakh hectares with an estimated production of 265.54 lakh metric tons of 43.36 quintals per hectare.
While the procurement in the western part of upper UP, including Hardoi, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Sitapur has started on October 1 and will end on January 31, 2025, the eastern part of UP will have the procurement season from November 1 to February 28, 2025. This extended timeline will help farmers all over the state to sell their produce at the MSP and get paid on time, thus boosting the productivity of agriculture in the region and the economy as a whole.
The state’s approach to the procurement of paddy is very elaborate, and the state has put in place proper payment modalities and many purchase centers to ensure that farmers are well facilitated throughout this important season in the agricultural calendar.
