A heated debate broke out in Varanasi following a viral video which had the shocking footage of cooking chicken and drinking liquor on a boat connected to a BJP councillor in the middle of the Ganga River. Police cracked down on five people spotted in the video and took custody of the man in the boat that was responsible for the incident.

A video, which was captured near the historic Dashashwamedh Ghat, went viral on social media and grabbed mass attention. The viral video said that the boat is of BJP-nominated councillor Satyanarayan Sahani, popularly known as Tanna, who works as a vice-president in the Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee Mandal unit of BJP.

The incident has raised questions as the Varanasi Municipal Corporation has given permission for the proposal which is limiting the sale of meat and fish in the city now. The Civic Body’s opinion was put to the test and there were concerns the actions were in contrast to what they said.

The arrested suspects were Deepak Kumar, Ajay Sahani, Arun Kumar Sahani, Anurag Nishad and Rahul Sahani, all in the age range of 25-32. The police have registered a case under the appropriate provisions and have initiated an investigation.

The video seems to be ageing but news agency officials are still probing its authenticity, said ACP Dashashwamedh Atul Anjan Tripathi. “It was not possible to say anything about the BJP councillor on the camera footage as such and the boat could be his or one of his family members,” upasala said.

Police have called on citizens to refrain from activities that could cause harm to religious sentiments, and also urged anyone found to violate the laws to face strict penalties.
